Bodoni Typeface Poster

Design Statement:

The typeface poster and booklet are meant to showcase a beautiful typeface throughout history. Showcasing how it transforms letters, glyphs, and numbers from the range of styles. Bodoni is that typeface that captured that elegance because of its satisfying contrasts. And that’s why I chose Bodoni.

I wanted to showcase the range of styles Bodoni has, while also exploring the history of the typeface. I was able to showcase all of this by using hierarchy and negative space. But most importantly, I wanted to focus on capturing that element of satisfaction. With the use of thumbnails, grids, and constant revisions, I was able to create a poster that I feel highlights Bodoni well. The ampersand was a nice design to add onto the poster, along with all the color choices. All the colors worked well because of the transparency blend and made the poster brighter. Keeping the same theme, I used multiple colors with the transparency blend on my booklet. All of this along with the background text helped create the final products for my project.

First Draft - I wanted to use a special symbol that captured the elegance of Bodoni, which is why I used the ampersand. The ampersand also worked as a nice base for the word "Bodoni" with the use of the serif/tail at the end of the ampersand. I laid out majority of the context to the right to provide spacing for the ampersand to shine. I wanted to incorporate the ampersand into the design, which is why I added the quote within the ampersand.

Second Draft - I went with one of my thumbnail sketch that used the letter "W" because the letter best showcases the contrast that Bodoni is known for. The thick and thin lines is captured perfectly in that letter. The letter and color choice reminded me of water and waves. Although Bodoni has contrast and is a precise typeface, it also has elegance, which is why I incorporated the background pattern.

Third Draft - I went with the ampersand design, but it needed more color. The colors changed drastically to make the poster more visibly appealing, and the use of the transparency blend made the ampersand stand out. Showcasing Bodoni's uniqueness to the fullest.

Final Revisions - I made the quote yellow to help the quote stand out from the rest of the context. A way to separate importance of information.

I wanted to showcase other letters on the main cover, while still incorporating the ampersand to relate it back to the main poster. I used the letter "T" in the inside front cover because it worked as a natural divider. In the center of the "T" are ampersands that would changes with each example of classification.
